Overview

A sector-leading telecommunications organisation is seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join a major, long-term data platform programme. This role sits within a strategic initiative to build and scale a modern data platform using Databricks and Apache Spark, supporting advanced analytics, reporting, and data-driven decision-making at enterprise scale.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior contractor looking for a high-impact role with long-term stability, working on modern technologies within a mature, well-funded programme.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and optimise scalable data pipelines using Databricks and Apache Spark
• Develop robust batch and (where applicable) streaming data solutions
• Work on large-scale datasets to support analytics and business intelligence use cases
• Collaborate closely with data architects, analysts, and business stakeholders
• Ensure high standards around data quality, performance, reliability, and security
• Contribute to architectural decisions and data engineering best practices
• Support and guide less senior engineers within the team

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience working as a Senior Data Engineer in complex, enterprise environments
• Strong hands-on experience with Databricks and Apache Spark
• Excellent Python skills (Scala is a plus)
• Strong SQL and data modelling experience
• Experience with cloud-based data platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
• Solid understanding of modern data architectures (Lakehouse, Data Lake, ELT/ETL)
• Comfortable working in agile, cross-functional teams

Nice to Have

• Experience in telecommunications or other high-volume data environments
• Exposure to streaming technologies (Kafka, Spark Structured Streaming)
• Experience with data governance, performance tuning, and cost optimisation
